E - F Ailments

Earache 

Earache is characterised by severe pain in either or both ears and in the head, behind the ears.  They can accompany a head cold and may even be due to disease of the jaw joints, neck, throat or teeth.  Earache can be experienced acutely when flying in an aircraft. 
Essential Oils: Eucalyptus, Lavender, Peppermint and Tea Tree


Eczema

Eczema may be due to an allergy or could be the result of skin irritation. There are various underlying causes. It can be characterised by reddening and vesicle formation, scaling, itchy, weeping and crusting of the skin. The distress of dealing with this condition can prolong its symptoms.
Essential Oils: Bergamot, Chamomile (Roman), Juniper, Lavender, Myrrh, Palmarosa and Patchouli


Elbow Tendonitis

Elbow Tendonitis is the inflammation of the muscles and tendons around the elbow due to the repetitive use of the forearm muscles over an extended period of time.  
Essential Oils: German Chamomile, Eucalyptus, Lavender, Lemon, Thyme.


Endometriosis
 

Endometriosis refers to the condition where the lining of the uterus (endometrium) develops in other parts of the body, i.e., stray fragments from the endometrium escape and colonise in the pelvic cavity. 
Essential Oils: Roman Chamomile, Clary Sage, Cypress, Rose and Geranium.


Fainting
(light headedness)
 

Fainting occurs when there isn’t enough blood to the brain.  This can happen after a severe emotional shock or fright when the blood is directed to the abdominal area, which in turn lowers the blood supply to the brain. 
Essential Oils: Black Pepper, Peppermint and Rosemary.


Fatigue
 

Fatigue can occur either mentally or physically.  It is the associated tiredness that follows prolonged or intense activity, which can be either acute or chronic.
Essential Oils: Basil, Black Pepper, Cardamon, Ginger, Lavender, Peppermint, Petitgrain, Rosemary and Vetiver.


Feet
(tired, aching) 

There is such a large number of bones and muscles in the feet that subsequently a variety of complaints can affect them.  Injury, sprains, poor posture, pressure and over activity can cause the feet to ache or feel sore.
Essential Oils: Ginger, Peppermint, Petitgrain, Rosemary and Sage.


Fever
 

A fever is simply a rise in the body’s temperature above normal and can result if the body is fighting an infection. It can accompany bacterial or viral infections and can be symptomatic of shivering, headache, nausea, constipation or diarrhoea and a rise in temperature above 40.5c. may cause delirium in young children. 
Essential Oils: Basil, Eucalyptus, Ginger, Lemon, Lemongrass, Lime, Peppermint, Sage


Flatulence

Flatulence is a condition we suffer when excessive gas in the intestinal tract is produced.  This results in the expulsion of gas or air from the stomach through the mouth as in belching or a sensation of abdominal distention in which the gas is expelled through the anus. 
Essential Oils: Basil, Black Pepper, Fennel, Lavender, Lemon, Lemongrass, Lime, Marjoram and Peppermint.


Fluid Retention
 

As the name implies, fluid retention occurs when the body retains excess fluid.  This causes swelling around the ankles, hands, eyes and other parts of the body. 
Essential Oils: Cypress, Fennel, Frankincense, Grapefruit, Juniper and Patchouli.


Folliculitis

Folliculitis is a condition of the skin where hair follicles become infected and inflamed.  The infection penetrates the deeper layers of the skin, spreading rapidly leaving the skin feeling tender as it emits a discharge. 
Essential Oils: Lavender, Tea Tree.


Foot Odour
 

Foot odour may simply result from wearing the same shoes and socks on a daily basis or shoes and socks that don’t allow the feet to breath.  Natural fibres should always be chosen.  Hygiene is imperative, as too are dietary habits as a number of fungal disorders can occur in the presence of bacteria. 
Essential Oils: Sage and Tea Tree


Fractures

A fracture of a bone is a breakage, which is either complete or incomplete.  A simple fracture involves a clean break with little damage to the surrounding tissue and no break to the surface skin.  If the bone pierces through the skin the fracture becomes a compound or open fracture.  These suggested oils are for simple fractures.
Essential Oils: Bergamot, Lavender, Rosemary, Sandalwood and Thyme.


Frigidity
 

Frigidity usually relates to the lack of sexual desire in either men or women.  It can also relate to the inability to achieve orgasm during sexual intercourse.  Lack of confidence, low self esteem, fear or stress are feelings that can accompany this condition.
