What is Aromatherapy?

Aromatherapy is the most versatile natural therapy of our time. It is used extensively in Beauty therapy and Natural, Allopathic and Complementary medicine.

Aromatherapy in this context refers to the cosmetic use of pure plant extracts known as Essential oils (they can also be registered as therapeutic goods). As a cosmetic they are used to treat/change a wide range of skin conditions; their scent altering the way we feel and think within 3 seconds. As a therapeutic good  they address a broad range of physiological conditions/symptoms within the body and mind.

Essential oils are the working tools of Aromatherapy, they are found in various plant plants; not all plants are aromatic nor do they all have essential oil molecules.  Some plants form essential oil cells in different plant structures during its development and life – essential oils taken from different parts of the same plant will have a different composition and therefore a different therapeutic effect.  An example of this is the orange tree, which produces 3 totally different essential oils: Sweet Orange oil from the rind of the fruit, Petitigrain from the leaves and twigs and Neroli oil from the blossoms.
