Pregnancy

As a broad approximation it is estimated that substances with a molecular weight of less than 1000 can cross the blood stream. Since essential oil constituents have a molecular weight below 500 there is a common assumption that they are capable of crossing the placenta.  Therefore, it is critical that the chemical constituents that enter the blood stream from essential oils, for both mother and child have negligible toxicity level.

Precautions during pregnancy:

1. Do not apply essential oils onto the skin within the first 16 weeks of pregnancy

2. After the 16-week period an aromatherapy massage can be received once a week –
     halve the recommended adult dosage

3. Periodic bathing is recommended – halve the recommended adult dosage

4. Vaporization and Inhalations are ideal treatments to receive during pregnancy

5. Baths and Footbaths are very soothing and calming.  Simply halve the recommended adult dosage.

Avoid Topically during Pregnancy:

Basil, Clary sage,  Cedarwood (sp.Atlantica), Cypress, Eucalyptus, Lemongrass, Lime, Fennel, Frankincense (sp.Carterii), Ginger, Marjoram, Peppermint, Rosemary, Rose, Sage, Tea Tree and Thyme

The following Essential oils are recommended during pregnancy provided you halve the recommended adult dosage for each method of use that requires topical application of the essential oils when diluted:

Bergamot, Roman chamomile, Geranium, Grapefruit, Jasmine, Lavender, Lemon, Mandarin, Neroli, Orange, Patchouli, Rosewood, Sandalwood and Ylang Ylang
