Hydrosols / Mists

Hydrosols, also known as floral waters, hydroflorates, flower waters or distillates; they are by-products of the steam distillation process used to extract essential oils from plant parts. Hydrosols have a ‘water like’ consistency due to the way in which they are produced.

For example; a distiller places the plant or plant part into a vat. Steam passes through the base of the vat to help dilate the pores of plant part/s to enable the fragrant volatile liquids (essential oil) e.g. lavender, to evaporate. Once the essential oil becomes airborne within the steam, it rises and passes through a cooling chamber whereby the steam cools and returns to its liquid state. It is collected in a separate flask on the side of the distilling chamber (vat). Essential oils (large aromatic molecules) are not soluble in water, they therefore sit on top of the now essential oil infused water (hydrosol/floral water produced from the steam) and are tapped off into a separate flask; thus leaving the nutrient rich floral water or hydrosol, to be utilized for topical application in the cosmetic industry.

The chemical components in the hydrosol / floral water reflect the true nature of the whole of the plant from which they were derived. Although less concentrated than the essential oil, they maintain the integrity, nutritional quality and chemical constitution of the whole of the plant/plant part. Their nature is hydrophilic (water-loving) and they possess, to a lesser degree, the antiseptic, antiviral and antibacterial nature of the plant / plant part from which they were derived.

Hydrosols are seasonal and their fragrance has been described as having a sweet natural ‘honey plant like’ scent. They are effective skin tonics if used immediately after distillation or over time when preserved naturally.

They can be added as an ingredient to other Mist type products; such as Toners, Tonics  and  Aromatherapy Sprays; for face, body, personal care or household cleaning.
